Plus

04Google Gemini:Android

  • 响应明显慢于 ChatGPT(10-15 秒对 2-4 秒)

Gemini
Claude
Perplexity
Copilot

  2. 2

    Android:Gemini

Open the app store and the claims hit you at once — dozens of AI apps, every one of them insisting it is the smartest, the most powerful, or simply the best. Few of them earn the space they occupy. Which will leave your battery intact, keep your data private and not drive you mad with a clumsy interface?

Over the past month, the five most popular AI apps lived on both our iPhones and our Android handsets. They drafted emails, worked out maths problems and planned trips for us. Response speed, usability, the quality of features and battery drain were all tracked. Some findings will raise eyebrows — most of all where the free options are concerned.

Students after homework help, professionals chasing a productivity edge, or simply the curious — whoever you are, this guide narrows the choice down, so you skip the downloads you would have binned within a week.

01The Short Answer: Which One Really Wins?

Skip the full comparison if you prefer: install ChatGPT. Nothing to configure, no cost, runs on iPhone and Android alike, and it covers 95% of what most people actually want from an AI app.

One app rarely suits everybody, though. Deep inside Google's world of Gmail, Docs and Drive? Gemini will probably treat you better. Citations matter for your research? Nothing beats Perplexity. Long-form writing on the agenda? Claude reads more naturally.

Better still, every one of them costs nothing to try. Install two or three and give them a spin — which interface and answer style suits you soon becomes obvious. Plenty of users end up splitting tasks between apps regardless.

02Five Apps, Tested and Ranked

Each app gets a full write-up below: its strengths, its weak spots, and the kind of user it suits.

03Why ChatGPT Takes the Top Spot for Most Users

A month of everyday use left ChatGPT as our number-one pick for phone users. The reasons:

Where It Shines:

  • Speed: answers land almost immediately, and that holds true without paying. Across 5G and WiFi testing, replies arrived within 2-4 seconds every time.
  • Versatility: drafting a work email, chasing down a bug, coming up with something to cook, or getting to grips with an unfamiliar idea — none of it trips the app up.
  • Voice Mode: spoken exchanges feel startlingly lifelike — you can go back and forth as though chatting with another person, which suits hands-busy moments and multitasking.
  • Image Analysis: aim the camera at whatever is in front of you — an equation, a foreign-language menu, a plant you cannot name — and useful information comes back.

Newcomers who have been asking themselves how AI chatbots actually work will find ChatGPT a gentle place to begin: the interface explains itself and the learning curve is forgiving.

Its Weak Points:

  • Free users hit caps at busy hours (we seldom ran into one during testing)
  • No live web browsing, unless you subscribe to Plus
  • Answers can be out of date, owing to the knowledge cutoff

04Google Gemini: The Android Heavyweight

Android owners — and anyone embedded in Google's services — ought to give Gemini a serious look. On plenty of devices it has taken over from Google Assistant, and deservedly so.

Features That Stand Out:

  • Real-Time Information: where ChatGPT's unpaid version stops at a knowledge cutoff, Gemini reaches the live web. Today's forecast, breaking headlines, in-play scores — all within reach.
  • Google Integration: with your consent it can go through your mail, condense a Google Doc, fetch files from Drive and even draft replies in Gmail. No rival gets this close to the Google stack.
  • Image Generation: Google's Imagen engine lets it produce pictures, though results are uneven next to purpose-built image tools.

For everyday practicalities — meal planning, tidying up a schedule, keeping Google services in order — Gemini proved especially handy.

Where It Struggles:

  • The iOS build is rougher around the edges than its Android counterpart
  • Can be needlessly cautious, turning down requests that are plainly harmless
  • Its prose is not quite as natural as Claude's or ChatGPT's

05Microsoft Copilot: GPT-4 Without Paying

The pitch is hard to turn down: GPT-4 at no cost — the very model that costs $20/month over at ChatGPT.

Reasons to Install It:

  • GPT-4 for Free: the main attraction by far. Compared with ChatGPT's unpaid tier, GPT-4 is stronger, more accurate and more capable.
  • DALL-E 3 Image Generation: type a description, get a striking picture. A prompt such as "a cyberpunk cat wearing neon sunglasses" produced results that genuinely impressed us.
  • Multiple Modes: Creative, Balanced or Precise — pick whichever fits, depending on whether you are after imagination or factual precision.

What You Give Up:

  • Replies take clearly longer than ChatGPT's (10-15 seconds against 2-4 seconds)
  • Free accounts are capped on how many conversations a day they get
  • The interface comes across as busier than rival apps

06Claude: What Writers Reach For

Writing is what you mainly need — essays, messages, fiction, reports? Then Claude, of everything we tried, turns out the most human-sounding prose.

Its Distinctive Edge:

  • Natural Tone: nothing mechanical here — the register stays conversational. The stiff, repetitive wording that creeps into other assistants is largely absent.
  • Long Context Window: enormous documents are no problem — up to 200,000 tokens, which works out at roughly 150,000 words. Hand it a whole book, then ask for a summary or a close reading of one chapter.
  • Excellent Editor: drop your text in and have it polished, checked for mistakes or recast in another style — the output holds up every time.

Shortcomings:

  • Images are neither analysed nor generated
  • The live web is out of reach
  • Daily message caps on the free tier are strict

07Perplexity: Your Research Sidekick

Perplexity makes no attempt to please everyone. A single task defines it — hand you information that is accurate and properly sourced — and no other app does that job as well.

Ideal If You Need:

  • Students: answers carry numbered citations that point back to the original sources, so tracing where a claim came from stops being guesswork.
  • Fact-Checking: verifying a claim or digging deeper into a subject becomes simple, because the sources are laid out for you to follow.
  • Current Events: because the search runs live, breaking news, sports results, market moves and the like arrive current.

Where It Comes Up Short:

  • Creative writing and idea generation are not its strength
  • Conversation is limited — question-and-answer is the design goal, not chatting
  • No image capability at all

09Picking the App That Fits You

Undecided about what to install? Work through three questions:

  1. 1

What will you use it for most?

    1 Everyday jobs: ChatGPT
    Google integration: Gemini
    Writing: Claude
    Research: Perplexity
Advanced features at no charge: Copilot

  2. 2

    Which phone are you on?

2 iPhone: every app performs well, though ChatGPT and Claude offer the smoothest iOS experience.
Android: Gemini integrates most deeply, yet all of them run fine.

  3. 3

Do you need information as it happens?

3 Yes: go with Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot (each reaches the web)
No: ChatGPT or Claude will do (their knowledge is cut off at a point in time)

A tip worth taking: install two or three, then live with them for seven days. Which layout you like and which AI's "character" fits you becomes clear fast. In the end plenty of people divide tasks between apps — ChatGPT for a quick query, Claude for writing, Perplexity for research.

10Answers to Common Questions

Which free AI app works best on a phone?
For the majority of phone users, ChatGPT still takes the crown among free options — it is versatile, simple to operate and its unpaid tier is substantial. Google Gemini follows closely, particularly for Android owners who want tight Google integration.
On mobile, does ChatGPT beat Gemini?
Conversation and creative work are ChatGPT's strengths; live information and Google service integration belong to Gemini. Go with ChatGPT to write or brainstorm, and with Gemini for research and factual questions.
Can AI apps run without a connection?
Since the processing happens on distant servers, an internet link is normally required. A few exceptions exist: certain builds of Microsoft Copilot can handle basic tasks with limited offline capability.
Which one drains the battery least?
Apps built around text, ChatGPT and Claude among them, are light on battery. Voice features and image generation draw noticeably more. To conserve power, use text only and turn background refresh off.
How safe are these apps for my privacy?
Apps from well-known firms do apply encryption and publish privacy policies, yet sensitive personal details are still best kept out of your prompts. Check the permissions each app asks for, and delete conversations whenever the option exists.
Do I need technical know-how to use them?
Of course. Today's AI apps are built for a general audience. If you can already put AI tools to work in everyday life with no coding background, the mobile versions are easier still — just a simple chat box.
