This is a native plugin built exclusively for DeepSeek Harness (DSH) that lets users ask focused follow-up questions about selected text without leaving their current main conversation. To install it, you first need to have DSH 0.1.2-rc.1 or newer installed globally, then clear the package cache to avoid pulling an outdated version, and run the DSH plugin add command to pull the latest release from the official registry. After installation, start DSH from your target local project directory, open the DSH web client URL, and the plugin will load automatically.

To use the plugin, you first need to complete at least one full turn in the main DSH conversation before you can select any text. On mobile devices, long-press text to select it, while on desktop you can click and drag to highlight text inside one completed user or assistant message. There is also no automatic history cleanup, and archived child side chat sessions still take up normal DSH session storage space on your local device. Any file changes or tool side effects made during a side chat are permanently saved to your shared workspace, just like changes from the main conversation.

Ask a focused follow-up about selected text without leaving your current conversation in DeepSeek Harness Desktop or Web.

Ask about selected text in Side Chat, then add the Side Chat conversation to the main chat

Install

Use a Side Chat version that matches your DSH runtime:

The instructions below use Side Chat 1.0.2 with DSH 0.2.0-rc.2. If you are staying on DSH rc.1, keep Side Chat 1.0.1 until you upgrade the runtime.

DeepSeek Harness Desktop

In DeepSeek Harness Desktop 0.2.0-rc.2, open the plugin installation dialog and enter the complete package spec:

Install it, then restart DeepSeek Harness Desktop. Use the Desktop app's plugin manager for Desktop installations; the CLI commands below target the Web profile.

Web (dsh web)

Install the matching DSH CLI if needed, then install the pinned plugin version:

Start DSH from the project you want the agent to work in:

Open the URL printed by DSH. The plugin loads automatically in the Web client.

Local linked development

When dsh plugin --profile web list shows the plugin coming from a link: workspace, DSH loads the committed lib/client.js, not src/. Rebuild after switching branches or changing client source, then restart the dsh web process:

pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm build

Use Side Chat

On phones and tablets, long-press text in a completed message to select it. The Side Chat action bar appears below the selection when there is room, leaving the browser's native selection bar above it. Use Add to chat, More details, or Ask in side chat directly from the touch action bar.

  1. Complete at least one turn in the main conversation.
  2. Select text inside one completed user or assistant message.
  3. Click Add to chat to add an optional comment before attaching the passage to the main composer, More details to send an explanation request immediately, or Ask in side chat to write a focused question.
  4. When writing your own message or question, press Enter to send it.
  5. After a Side Chat reply settles, click Add to conversation to attach that focused discussion to the main composer as one conversation reference.
  6. Click ×, or press Esc while focused inside the Side Chat panel, when you are done. Escape in another composer or menu does not close Side Chat.
