dsh-custom-mode is a custom-mode plugin that targets DeepSeek Harness (DSH) exclusively, shipping as a settings-page plugin plus a preset that seeds on first activation. The package adds a dedicated web settings panel where users can pick a base mode composition from the four official DSH modes (standard / ptc / minimal / cordis, which remain untouched), toggle individual plugin rows, and edit a system prompt that lives as a plain file the agent loop re-reads before every model step; edits take effect on the next step without a restart, and several assistants can coexist with their own prompts, plugin rows, and role-play personas. Installation is a single command — dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-custom-mode@1.9.16 — after which the user restarts the DSH web process; the version pin is mandatory because pnpm's minimumReleaseAge cooldown (24 hours by default) makes a bare add dsh-custom-mode resolve to whatever is older than the cooldown, and the README measured this on a clean machine. A typical workflow starts with running the pinned install command, opening the Web profile settings, choosing a base mode in the picker, toggling the plugin rows that the assistant should mount, and writing a system prompt that DSH re-reads before each model call. When an update lands, the user simply re-runs the pinned install; the platform owns node_modules, so the data directory $DSH_HOME/.agent-presets/<assistant>/ containing prompt.md, preset.yml, and the row switches is never touched, and seeding only fills in files that are missing, which means a user-edited prompt is never overwritten. Two known first-run caveats are documented: if the base mode and switches are greyed out with a one-line warning, the current DSH line exposes no shipped composition to this plugin and the system prompt still saves on its own; and if a mode disappears from the picker after an update, an older assistant file references a plugin row that the new line no longer ships, which the settings page surfaces with a "Fix for this line" button that disables exactly those rows and leaves everything else intact.

The project is licensed MIT and ships an npm package, with CI verified on Ubuntu Node 20 and Node 24 plus Windows for both supported DSH lines: 0.1.7-rc.2 (latest preview, bundled by the official desktop app) and 0.1.5-rc.3 (latest stable, what the catalogue's one-click install gives most users); older preview builds such as 0.1.6-alpha.* fall inside the declared peer range but no longer get their own CI leg. The four review-driven iterations that produced releases 1.4.0 through 1.9.0 (stable-line picker fix, Windows write races, i18n leaks, portability, two UI passes) cost roughly 717 million tokens at a 99.4% cache hit rate, and the whole project including the first pass stands at about 844 million tokens at 99.5% cached, all measured inside the same DSH client on deepseek-v4-flash.
