Project Overview项目介绍

StarAgent is an agent multiplexer that unifies management of coding agent sessions across multiple machines via a centralized web dashboard. It works with multiple coding agent CLIs including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and DSH. To set up a deployment, users first install the tool via pip from the source repository, then run staragent hub on the machine that will host the dashboard. Remote machines that will run agent sessions get a Node deployment, connected via Tailscale for cross-machine secure access or directly over a local area network. Any device with a web browser can access the dashboard without extra software installed.

This tool is built for developers who regularly run multiple coding agent tasks across different working directories and want a single place to manage all of them. All agent sessions run inside long-lived tmux sessions, so users do not need to manually resume sessions every time they reconnect after a restart or disconnect. Users can check the status of all running agents at a glance, interact directly with agents via the web dashboard, or manually SSH into any remote machine to debug sessions if needed. The dashboard works on mobile and desktop devices, so you can manage agents from anywhere with an internet connection.

StarAgent is released under the open source MIT license, but it is currently under active development and intended only for personal use, with no stable version released yet. The project notes that it was built primarily with vibe coding, so potential bugs may exist that users should watch out for. To run cross-machine connections via Tailscale, users must have Tailscale installed and configured beforehand, and some setups may require sudo privileges for Tailscale serve. After installation, users must verify remote nodes from the hub before adding them to the dashboard. Custom themes and backgrounds can be configured to match user preferences.

⚠️ This project is currently intended for personal use and is under active development. A stable version will be released later.

⚠️ This project was primarily built with vibe coding and may contain potential bugs. Please keep this in mind before using it.

StarAgent is a local-first Agent Harness Launcher and an optional multi-Node Hub for managing coding agent sessions. It reflects my own best practices for using multiple agents:

We need a lightweight persistent terminal wrapper for Codex / Claude Code that supports cross-machine connections and can be accessed from any device.

Design Principles

It is built around a few practical needs that show up when using coding agents day to day:

  • We often run multiple agent CLI instances in parallel across different working directories, each handling a separate task. We need one place to check their status and interact with them in real time.
  • We want to interact with our agents anywhere, anytime, and on any device. And the sessions should be consistent.
  • Agent CLI sessions should be long-lived, so we do not need to keep typing /resume.

Based on hands-on experience, StarAgent uses the simplest effective stack for this workflow, making it feel like managing a small team of coding agents:

  • Platform-native persistent terminals. Windows Desktop hosts sessions with ConPTY; Linux, macOS, and server Nodes use long-lived tmux sessions. See SESSIONS.md for the session model.

  • Cross-machine connectivity via Tailscale. Tailscale provides a secure and unified network layer across machines. See tailscale/README.md for the Tailscale setup.

  • Unified management through a web dashboard. The web dashboard lets you control agents from any device with a browser, including phones and laptops, without installing extra software.

  • Node-local account and launch control. Sign in or switch credential sources from the Harness page, browse the models exposed by each CLI, and choose model plus reasoning-effort defaults for new Sessions without rewriting vendor configuration files.
